The Story of Football |
||
| A long time ago when the game still was new | ||
| And players played to different rules known only to a few | ||
| Some people got together and when they were done | ||
| They'd made the game of football a joy for everyone | ||
| Yes people got together in London, Cambridge and Sheffield Town | ||
| And so in time the rules of the modern game were written down | ||
| And people walked from their smoky stacks out onto the fields green | ||
| And they learned to play the finest game the world has ever seen | ||
| And football is that game | ||
| Yes football is that game | ||
| Teams played for a cup and then the league was planned | ||
| Which began in 1888 and spread friendship throughout the land | ||
| And in time great players arose hailed as champions far and wide | ||
| Who were very honoured to play for the new-formed national sides | ||
| And teams played for factories and towns and more national flags unfurled | ||
| As the game was taken overseas and all around the world | ||
| And people learned how to compete and be strong but fair | ||
| And so the spirit of the game became known to people everywhere | ||
| And football is that game | ||
| Yes football is that game | ||
| And it brought different lands together and helped to make them see | ||
| That there's no need to fight each other with indignity | ||
| They can get their team out on the field and we'll see if they play fair | ||
| And they'll be known for how they play by people everywhere | ||
| And when I was young some boys I didn't know | ||
| Said come and have a game with us and I gave it a go | ||
| And soon they were friends of mine and I knew them all by name | ||
| And from that day on somehow my life has never been the same | ||
| And football is that game | ||
| Yes football is that game | ||
| And that's why football did become | ||
| The greatest game in all the world | ||
